At Golden Point on Sunday morning, it happened to be Spring Equinox. The luminosity of the shifting Spring skies, the threading of cool and warm breezes in between momentary sprinklings of soft rain and the silence was only interrupted by the lapping of wavelets on the rocky shoreline. We were held in a few moments of deep calm, a few moments of reprieve from the information overloaded world of angst and disarray which fill the airwaves of our lives.
This is a magical place relatively unspoiled by the historic industrialisation of Westernport. The natural raw hand of nature’s miraculous nurseries for migrating birds, and marine life thrive, providing fundamental protection and part of the food chain for all living creatures around the bay. For the health and well being of our own bodies and souls, this is a balm in our search to be reminded of original Earth. Here she stands in her own domain of complexity and hierarchies, teaming with life, rocking layers of the living some of which we cannot even see with our eyes or hear with our ears.
We were able to breathe deeply again, and hear the sound of our own heart beats resonating with the pulse of the land and the sea. We felt a nourishing tonic had been administered to every cell in our Beingness.
And now with the support of the Victorian Labor government, who continuously sprout on about renewables and carbon emission targets, the big ruthless and blatantly self-serving corporation AGL plan to install their totally unnecessary and wasteful Floating Storage and Regasification Unit (FSRU) right in the middle of this little paradise of earthly life. This is for them to make a quick buck and prove to everyone how clever and on the forefront of energy supply they are.
If they were far-sighted and truly clever, they would be pursuing renewables instead, at full throttle.
Blinded by an old-world grasping for the material: ‘all industrialisation is progress’ trajectory, they cannot be trusted. Their arguments about why this will be so good for us are hollow and flaky, the only substance is the obscene ‘holy-grail’ of corporate righteousness, and big, big money.
Underlying their two-dimensional environmental studies are hardened old-domain belief systems: which are that the plundering and raping of the natural world to death, somehow still isn’t registering as anything to be concerned about when you’re busy filling your coffers for your anxious shareholders and stakeholders.
‘Unless the human race realizes with a passion and reverence beyond thought or words its inter-being with nature, it will destroy in its greed the very environment it is itself sustained by.’
